Yang Philemon ha had an extensive political experience especially while serving as Prime Minister of Cameroon from 2009 to 2019, giving him a strong background in international affairs and diplomacy. His diplomatic skill had been nurtured in his early studies and while he served in Cameroon’s diplomatic mission out of the country.

On leadership skills, Yang as Prime Minister was responsible for coordinating government policies and overseeing the executive branch, demonstrating his ability to lead effectively.

Coming from Cameroon, Yang has a deep understanding of African issues and can bring a unique perspective to his role as UNGA President.

Yang has seeably established relationships with other African leaders and key international figures, which could help him navigate diplomatic challenges at the UNGA.

Demerits

Though having work in a political set-up in Cameroon as well as foreign diplomatic missions, Yang PhilΓ©mon lacks experience in international organisations. He has experience in government, but may not have extensive experience working within the United Nations system or other international organisations.

He has had limited exposure to global issues: As Prime Minister of Cameroon, Yang’s focus may have been primarily on domestic issues, potentially limiting his knowledge of global challenges outside of Africa.

Many western countries fear because of his background, Yang may potentially have bias towards African interests. While his regional knowledge can be a plus, it may also lead to a perceived bias towards African interests, potentially complicating his role as a neutral UNGA President.

It is also feared that Philemon Yang may have a limited experience in multilateral diplomacy. He may therefore face challenges in navigating the complex web of international relations and negotiations that are a central part of the UNGA President’s role.

Light at End of Tunnel

Amidst Yang’s inhibiting traits, his accession  the helm of the UNGA affords him a platform to elevate African issues. As UNGA President, Yang can use his position to raise awareness of African issues and advocate for solutions to regional challenges. In case in point is the raging Anglophone crisis which in his own fief in Cameroon which unfortunately erupted while he was prime minister, but failed to address the crisis at the embryonic stage where many think he could.

Yang’s presidency could provide networking opportunities to connect with other world leaders and stakeholders, thereby potentially enhancing his diplomatic skills and relationships.

This platform for leadership development may possibly give Yang a unique opportunity to develop his leadership skills on a global stage and gain experience in multilateral diplomacy.

Fears

Political pressure and criticism are like to set in. Yang may face political pressure or criticism from various stakeholders who disagree with his policies or actions as UNGA President.

Managing the diverse interests and priorities of UNGA member states can be complex and challenging, potentially leading to diplomatic disputes or conflicts.

The UNGA President may face constraints in terms of resources and support, which could hinder his ability to effectively fulfill his duties.
