World Radio Day 2026 is being celebrated today the 13th of February under the theme” Radio and Artificial intelligence: AI is a Tool, Not a Voice”.
The day highlights the enduring power of radio as a trusted medium of information while reminding the world that artificial intelligence must support _not replace human judgement and responsibility in broadcasting.
World Radio Day is observed every Year on February 13, It was proclaimed in 2011 by Member states of UNESCO and later adopted in 2012 by the United Nations General Assembly.
The day recognizes the important role radio continues to play in informing, educating and connecting communities across the globe. Government broadcasts, Journalists and listeners all take part in celebrating this unique medium.
Radio has remained relevant because of its simplicity and accessibility. Long before smartphones streaming and perform, it served as a companion in homes, farms and remote villages .
Even today, radio requires no Internet connection, expensive gadgets or digital skills _ just a signal and receiver. This makes it one of the most accessible forms of communication, especially regions facing economic or technological challenges. It bridges social, geographic and economic divides by bringing news, music and diverse voices to millions.
Beyond entertainment and information, radio plays a key educational role. It supports distance and learning, promotes literacy and creates space for dialogue on social, economic and political issues. Through educational programmes, talk shows, and community discussion, radio strengthens democracy and encourages informed citizenship. In this Year’s celebration, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the importance of radio in reaching and uniting people.
The 2026 theme focuses on how artificial intelligence is transforming the media landscape. AI can assist journalists in gathering information, analysing data and improving content delivery. However, experts stress that AI must be used ethically and responsibly. It should support professional judgment, creativity and public service values rather than replace human voices. When guided by ethics and accountability, AI can help strengthen audience trust and deepen the bond between broadcasters and listeners.
As the theme clearly states, AI is a Tool _not a voice.
