He is Accused of  filming several women during intimacy without their consent

The Government of Ghana has initiated steps to extradite a Russian national accused of covertly recording intimate encounters with women and distributing the footage online without their permission, in what officials describe as a serious breach of the country’s cybersecurity laws.

Authorities say the suspect, widely described in African and Russian media as a self-proclaimed “pick-up artist” and online content creator in his thirties, travelled to Ghana where he allegedly filmed his interactions with several women without their knowledge. Reports circulating in both regions claim he used camera-equipped sunglasses to capture some of the footage before sharing the videos on social media platforms. However, government officials have not publicly confirmed the specific methods used.

Speaking to journalists in Accra, Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, stated that he had summoned the Russian ambassador for discussions regarding the matter. He stressed that the alleged acts violate Ghana’s cyber protection laws and assured the public that authorities would pursue the case vigorously.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may have already departed Ghana. Despite this, the minister emphasized that his possible exit from the country does not lessen the gravity of the accusations or the state’s obligation to seek justice for the affected women.

He added that Ghana would collaborate with international law enforcement bodies, including Interpol, to track down the suspect.

Although Ghana plans to formally request his return, Russia rarely extradites its own citizens except under exceptional conditions. Minister George indicated that if the suspect fails to return voluntarily, Ghana could proceed with legal action in his absence.

Media reports further allege that the same individual may have engaged in comparable misconduct in Kenya, though this has yet to be officially verified by Ghanaian authorities.

Under Ghana’s Cybersecurity Act of 2020, individuals found guilty of sharing explicit material without consent—whether involving adults or minors—face penalties of up to 25 years’ imprisonment.

In recent years, the country has intensified its crackdown on online exploitation, including cases of sexual extortion and non-consensual distribution of intimate content.

In 2022, a Ghanaian court sentenced a 22-year-old phone technician to 14 years behind bars after he admitted to sharing nude photographs of a Lebanese woman as part of a sexual extortion scheme. The case underscored the government’s firm stance against digital abuse and revenge pornography.

The latest allegations highlight Ghana’s growing resolve to combat online exploitation and protect individuals from digital violations.
