Ethiopia’s Army marks 65 years anniversary
Abiy Ahmed joined senior military officials and community leaders on Sunday as Ethiopia celebrated the 65th anniversary of its Special Operations Command in Hawassa. The ceremony highlighted military modernization efforts at a time of renewed tensions near the Tigray border.
The anniversary event took place at Hawassa International Stadium and attracted senior officials of the Ethiopian National Defense Force, including Chief of General Staff Field Marshal Birhanu Jula and Deputy Chief General Abebaw Tadesse. The gathering brought together military personnel, government representatives, and traditional leaders.
Elders from the Sidama community performed the traditional Qeetala ceremony, a cultural ritual symbolizing honor and unity. The ceremony reflected the link between national defense and local traditions.
During the celebration, troops demonstrated modern military skills, including precision drills, water-based exercises, and coordinated airborne operations. The displays aimed to show the progress made in strengthening the Special Operations Command.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said recent defense reforms have helped transform the unit into a modern force that combines airborne, commando, and counter-terrorism capabilities. He praised members of the armed forces for their role in protecting the country, saying Ethiopia has been built by generations who defended national sovereignty.
The anniversary comes at a time of renewed concern in northern Ethiopia. The Tigray Region, which was heavily affected by the civil war between 2020 and 2022, remains tense. Ethiopian authorities have accused the neighboring Eritrea of crossing into the region, raising fears of possible new conflict.
One banner displayed during the ceremony showed a warship flying the Ethiopian flag, a symbolic image for a country without direct access to the sea.
Observers say the image may reflect Ethiopia’s interest in strengthening its defense ambitions despite being landlocked.
