When Truth Becomes a Crime: The Brutal Silencing of Cameroon’s Press Corps in Yaoundé

There has been a deeply troubling display of authoritarian excess in Cameroon’s political capital ‚ Yaounde. Yesterday‚ security forces unleashed a wave of repression against a cohort of Anglophone journalists, legal practitioners, and media professionals whose sole transgression was the conscientious pursuit of truth. Their mission to document and give voice to a group of individuals forcibly repatriated to Cameroonian soil under a controversial and ethically dubious agreement brokered by the Trump administration was void institutional cooperation, but camevwith brute physical force and arbitrary detention.

Barr. Awah Joseph Fru

Among those subjected to this egregious abuse of state power were distinguished legal counsel Barrister Awah Joseph Fru, veteran freelance journalist and former BBC correspondent Randy Joe Sa’ah, Associated Press stringer Nalova Akwa, AP photojournalist Angel Ngwe, and AP videographer Arnold Ndal. These individuals, pillars of their respective professions, found themselves hauled before the Judicial Police, subjected to protracted interrogations, and stripped of their professional equipment — laptops and mobile devices confiscated without justification.

Most alarming, however, was the harrowing fate of one journalist who sustained grievous injuries from a vicious assault involving repeated blows and kicks at the hands of law enforcement officers, ultimately collapsing within the confines of his detention cell. The sheer savagery of this act against a member of the Fourth Estate sent shockwaves through Cameroon’s civil society.

Angel Ngwe

Ndape Sally, a prominent social activist, underscored the opacity surrounding the affair, noting that while the detained were accused of unauthorized documentation, no formal charges were ever clearly articulated — a hallmark of politically motivated persecution rather than legitimate law enforcement.

Viban Jude, at the helm of Cameroon’s union of Anglophone journalists, confirmed that his colleagues were on an unambiguous professional assignment, conducting interviews with African deportees on Cameroonian territory — individuals, paradoxically, who hold no Cameroonian citizenship whatsoever, rendering their forced repatriation all the more legally questionable.

The overarching question that now reverberates across the nation is one that no administration rooted in democratic principles should ever inspire: what is President Paul Biya’s regime so desperately determined to conceal that it would resort to the physical brutalization and systematic silencing of those whose constitutional mandate is to inform the public? The answer, whatever its nature, appears to be one his government is willing to suppress through violence — and that, in itself, is profoundly revealing.
