SOCADEL S.A. has officially commenced operations, thereby creating a shift in the management of the electricity sector in the country.
The development follows a presidential decree signed by the President of Cameroon, Paul Biya, converting ENEO Cameroon S.A. into a fully state-owned enterprise. The reform is aimed at strengthening control, improving efficiency, and addressing persistent power supply challenges.
The Minister of water and Energy Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba confirmed that the company’s first board meeting held in Yaoundé focused on establishing governance structures and appointing key officials.
The restructuring comes amid ongoing electricity shortages affecting areas such as Douala and Buea, where outages have disrupted economic activities.
Authorities state that SOCADEL will oversee electricity production, distribution, and management under a new framework designed to improve service delivery. The government maintains that the reform will enhance oversight and address long-standing inefficiencies in the sector.
