The government of Chad has ordered the temporary closure of its eastern frontier with Sudan, citing growing security risks linked to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Officials say the measure is intended to protect civilians and prevent armed violence from spreading across the border.

Authorities announced that the border would remain shut indefinitely as a precaution against repeated movements of armed groups from Sudan into Chadian territory.

According to government representatives, the decision is meant to strengthen national security, although limited crossings may still be authorised for urgent humanitarian reasons.

The restriction follows renewed clashes in the Sudanese border town of al-Tina, where fighters associated with Sudan’s army confronted members of the Rapid Support Forces. The violence occurred close to Chadian territory, heightening fears that instability could spill over into neighbouring communities.

Chad has already received a large number of people fleeing the conflict in Sudan since fighting began in 2023. Many of these displaced individuals have sought safety in eastern Chad, making the country one of the main destinations for Sudanese refugees.

Officials explained that the closure is a preventive step after reports that armed elements from Sudan had crossed into Chad. The authorities stressed that the action is aimed at protecting both local residents and displaced populations living near the frontier.

The conflict in Sudan began after tensions escalated between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Disputes over the integration of the paramilitary group into the regular armed forces eventually turned into a prolonged armed confrontation.

Chadian authorities also warned that any attack or violation of their territory could provoke a response. Residents living near the border have been advised to remain vigilant and respect the new security measures.

Recent fighting around al-Tina reportedly affected Chadian forces as well, with casualties recorded among soldiers and civilians. Several people were killed and others injured during the violence.

Meanwhile, Sudanese military officials have accused Chad of supporting the Rapid Support Forces and allowing weapons to pass through its territory. The Chadian government has rejected these claims in the past.
