Presidential Campaign In Congo

Campaign activities for next month’s presidential election in Republic of the Congo begin this Saturday, with long-serving leader Denis Sassou Nguesso widely expected to secure another mandate.

The 82-year-old former army officer first governed from 1979 to 1992 before losing multiparty polls to Pascal Lissouba. He regained control after a 1997 civil conflict and has remained in office since. Earlier this month, he confirmed his intention to seek what the constitution describes as a final five-year term.

The campaign opens in Pointe-Noire with a rally organized by the ruling Congolese Labour Party. Voting is scheduled for March 15 following the close of campaigns on March 13.

Six challengers have declared their candidacies, among them first-time contender Destin Gavin of the Republican Movement. However, a divided opposition faces an uphill battle against the entrenched ruling party, which projects overwhelming support for its veteran leader.

Among Africa’s longest-serving heads of state—alongside Paul Biya and Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo—Sassou Nguesso has repeatedly prevailed in elections since 2002, aided by constitutional revisions that removed age limits and expanded term eligibility.

Although critics dispute past results and denounce restrictions on political freedoms, supporters argue his leadership restored relative calm after the turmoil of the 1990s civil war. As the nation heads to the polls, stability and continuity remain central themes in the unfolding contest.
