The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon fell to a 1-0 defeat against Australia in Sydney, with a late defensive mistake undoing the resilient display that had been anchored by captain Devis Epassy’s superb penalty save.
In their opening fixture of the 2026 FIFA Series at Stadium Australia, the Lions looked set to hold the Socceroos to a creditable draw until a lapse in concentration five minutes from time allowed home side substitute Jordy Bos to score the only goal of the night.
Epassy stands tall from the spot
The visitors, missing a host of established stars including Manchester United’s Bryan Mbuemo and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, were under pressure for long periods. But they were kept in the contest by their goalkeeper and skipper, Devis Epassy.
Epassy’s finest moment arrived in the second half when he denied Ajdin Hrustic from the penalty spot. After a VAR review awarded Australia a spot kick, the goalkeeper dived low to his left to push the ball away—keeping Cameroon level .
He had earlier produced several other key interventions to prevent the hosts from building a lead, ensuring the Lions went into the final stages with a genuine chance of taking something from the match.
• Costly error
Just as Cameroon appeared to have done enough to secure a draw, the defence was undone by a single mistake. Defender Samuel Kotto failed to deal with a crisp pass into the box, allowing Bos to nip in, round the defender, and calmly slot past Epassy at the near post.
While the Indomitable Lions were organised at the back, they offered little going forward. With several key attacking players absent, the team struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-drilled Australian defence operating in a three-man system.
What’s next?
Cameroon will take lessons from the narrow loss as they continue their FIFA Series campaign. The result may sting, but the performance—especially in the face of Australia’s second-half push—showed a resilience that could serve them well in the next outing.
