Bafana Bafana Smash the Glass Ceiling: Pyjama Parties, a 74-Year-Old’s Farewell, and a Nation Waking Up to History

From 3 a.m. sacrifices to pyjama-clad street dancers, South Africa’s first-ever World Cup knockout qualification is the fairy tale that has a continent talking — and a retiring coach sobbing on the sidelines.

Thapelo Maseko’s 63rd-minute strike handed Bafana Bafana a famous 1-0 win over South Korea at Monterrey Stadium, catapulting Hugo Broos’ men into the Round of 32. The goal flipped Group A on its head, dropping South Korea to third and setting up a colossal Sunday showdown with Canada. For a side written off as group-stage cannon fodder, the victory tasted extra sweet. Fanatic Byron Pillay captured the mood: “So many people said we’d be the whipping boys. That made this even sweeter.”

Back home, die-hard supporters ignored the 3 a.m. kickoff, watching in silence as history ticked closer. By sunrise, streets filled with supporters still in winter pyjamas, dancing and celebrating a feat delivered 10,000 kilometres away in Guadalupe, Mexico. Inside the locker room, players chanted and danced in a video that instantly went viral. The South African government hailed the “determination, discipline and fighting spirit” on display, while diplomats and politicians flooded social media with the rallying cry “Kaofela.”

The triumph carried added weight for 74-year-old Belgian coach Hugo Broos, who will retire after the tournament. Visibly emotional, he called it “one of my last games” and admitted the moment overwhelmed him. “We came here to survive the group stage, and that for me was really a moment of emotions,” Broos said. He has turned a team tagged as no-hopers into history-makers, a feat many are comparing to the unifying joy of the 2010 World Cup — only this time, the celebration belongs purely to the football.
