The Minister of Power in Nigeria, Adebayo Adelabu, is poised to step down within days after receiving the green light from President Bola Tinubu to pursue a governorship ambition.
His Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Tunji Bolaji, disclosed this in a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja, noting that the timing underscores the minister’s intent to wrap up key reforms before exiting office.
According to the statement, Adelabu met Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, where he presented a detailed scorecard of his two-and-a-half-year stewardship in the power sector.
Tinubu reportedly lauded the minister’s performance, highlighting strides made in policy formulation and sectoral reforms aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s electricity landscape. He also endorsed Adelabu’s political ambition.
“In light of this development, the minister will relinquish his position in the coming days,” Bolaji said.
The outgoing minister outlined gains recorded under his watch, including moves to stabilise power generation, boost transmission infrastructure, and drive reforms targeted at improving efficiency and service delivery.
A major highlight of the briefing was the rollout of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP), alongside its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) and a Medium-to-Long Term Integrated Resource Plan designed to ensure continuity and sustainability in the sector.
Bolaji described the NIEP as a long-term blueprint aimed at securing energy stability, widening electricity access, integrating renewables, and building a more resilient grid system.
He added that the SIP serves as the action framework, spelling out timelines, responsibilities, and concrete steps to translate policy into results.
Adelabu expressed gratitude to the president for his unwavering support, reaffirming his commitment to national development even as he prepares to transition into the political arena.
