The first lady of the nation, At the 41st Edition of women’s Day Celebration In Yaounde
Cameroon has joined countries around the world to commemorate the 41st edition of the International Women’s Day under the theme “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls.” While the occasion celebrates women’s achievements, activists are also drawing attention to growing concerns over femicide and violence against women across the country.
Observed globally every March 8, International Women’s Day serves not only as a moment of celebration but also as an opportunity to highlight the importance of safeguarding the rights, dignity, and equality of women and girls. In Cameroon, the commemoration honours women’s contributions in both public life and within families, acknowledging their role as pillars of society.
This year’s theme emphasises the need to strengthen gender equality, promote fairness, and encourage practical actions that can improve the lives of women and girls nationwide.
However, the celebration is unfolding in a social context marked by concern over gender-based violence. According to the organisation Stop Féminicide 237, at least 26 women have reportedly lost their lives in Cameroon since the start of 2026. Many of these cases, rights groups note, involve partners or acquaintances of the victims, revealing the ongoing risks faced by women.
As a result, activists are urging authorities and communities to reinforce protection systems and increase public awareness to ensure women can live safely and with dignity.
Despite these concerns, the day also provided an opportunity to recognise women who have made significant contributions to empowerment initiatives. In the Southwest Region, the Regional Delegation of Women’s Empowerment and the Family honoured several individuals for their dedication to advancing women’s rights and development.
Among those recognised was 100-year-old Mami Dora Ewusi, whose long life was praised as a symbol of resilience and community commitment. Former regional delegates were also acknowledged for their past leadership, including Sona Precilia, the pioneer regional delegate credited with establishing key foundations for women-focused programmes in the region.
Meanwhile, celebrations in Buea attracted notable personalities and drew large crowds. Nigerian actress Regina Daniels became a centre of attention as many attendees gathered around her to take photographs during the event. Although the actress attempted to support a visually impaired gospel singer performing on stage, the enthusiasm of fans shifted much of the spotlight toward her presence.
The occasion also featured official recognition of public service. As part of the celebrations, Honourable Malomba was awarded the distinction of Officer of the Order of Valour in Buea on March 8, 2026. The decoration, granted by President Paul Biya, was presented during a ceremony presided over by the Governor of the Southwest Region, Bernard Okalia Bilai, who represented the Head of State.
