Pope Leo XIV has concluded the Algeria leg of his African tour and is now en route to Cameroon, where he is expected to arrive in Yaounde at about 3:20 p.m.
Touching down earlier in Algiers, the Pontiff began with a state reception before holding talks with Abdelmadjid Tebboune and other key stakeholders. He visited the Martyrs’ Monument and later engaged civil society and diplomats, before praying at the Great Mosque of Algiers. A quiet stop at a missionary centre and an encounter with the Christian community at the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa marked the day’s highlights.
Day two shifted focus to Annaba, home to the ancient city of Hippo linked to Saint Augustine. There, he toured ruins, interacted with elderly residents at a Catholic care home, and celebrated Mass at the Basilica of Saint Augustine.
Final engagements included visits to Church-run institutions, where children staged a brief performance in his honour. Moments later, he exchanged farewells with clergy and staff at the Apostolic Nunciature.
Departure formalities wrapped up Wednesday morning at Houari Boumédiène International Airport, sealing the first phase of the Pope’s 11-day, four-nation mission, as attention now shifts to Cameroon for the next chapter of the apostolic journey.
