Football has always had a soft spot for prophets—especially the ones with tentacles.
Long before “AI” became a buzzword, we had Paul the Octopus, the original aquatic pundit, charming the world with eerily accurate World Cup picks. He inspired an entire cinematic universe of animal oracles: parakeets, otters, cats, and other creatures who—let’s be honest—were mostly just choosing lunch with vibes.
And because this is football—and Africa—predictions don’t only come from animal oracles; they also come from the pulpits. The continent’s charismatic “prophetic pundits” have been weighing in – albeit less than before – issuing match- and player-specific “revelations” that travel faster than VAR decisions—sometimes contradicting each other, and sometimes (awkwardly) contradicting the scoreboard.
In 2025, however, the prophecy business has been upgraded. AI and supercomputer predictions, armed with data sets, performance metrics, and enough statistical confidence are now making even the most stubborn uncles in the villages of Africa pause mid-argument. Nowhere is this shift more entertaining than at AFCON 2025, where the tournament has been doing what it does best: delivering drama, disorder, and the occasional outcome that makes every prediction model or “prophesy” quietly clear its throat. Far removed from aquatic and prophetic pundits, what is big data saying?
From octopus’ instincts to AI predictions
The modern forecasting pitch is simple: “We’re not guessing—we’re calculating.” AI models crunch team form, squad depth, match tempo, injuries, and sometimes even public sentiment (because apparently your group chat panic can now become a variable).
For AFCON 2025, many prediction engines have repeatedly leaned towards Morocco—the hosts—as the most likely champions. The logic is familiar: strong structure, tactical cohesion, crowd advantage, and enough individual quality to decide low-scoring knockout games.
And to be fair: the group stage made AI machines look smart. Several highly rated teams—Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, Algeria, and Ivory Coast—did exactly what top teams are “supposed” to do and finished top of their groups. But AFCON, as always, kept its wild side intact, with surprises like Sudan and Mozambique advancing as best third-place teams and knockout rounds that immediately started stress-testing every neat forecast. Cameroon’s deep run to the quarter-finals – last eight – has exceeded initial AI-driven statistical forecasts of a 4.1% chance of winning and ninth overall. In other words: the models were right… and the tournament still refused to behave.
We asked four AIs to build the bracket
To make this even more fun, we asked four popular AI models—ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Gemini, and Grok—to generate full knockout brackets, predicting every match from Mali vs Senegal (Friday, January 9) to the final on Sunday, January 18. They don’t “know” the future (no matter how confident the tone gets). What they do offer is a structured version of what fans and pundits already do: weigh strengths, debate momentum, imagine match scripts—then slap a scoreline on the argument. Think of it less as fortune-telling and more as a tidy way to organize the chaos—more “studio panel” than “sacred prophecy.”
Where the machines agree (and where they start sweating)
Across the quarter-finals, the models lean in similar directions on three fixtures:
Senegal vs Mali
Senegal was consistently favored. The reasoning loops: balance, experience, athletic control in transition, and enough attacking quality to convert pressure into goals. Mali got respect for discipline and compactness—but the AIs kept choosing Senegal on the fine margins that decide knockouts.
Our perspective on who wins: Senegal holds a commanding historical advantage over Mali and remains unbeaten in their last 13 matches against them. If the game is a test of endurance and grounded strength, the Lions of the Teranga will eventually corner its prey, showing that the “King of the Jungle” doesn’t yield his territory to anyone. However, if the game becomes a battle of speed and perspective, the Eagles of Mali will soar above the roar, waiting for that one moment to dive and strike from a height the Lion simply cannot reach.
Morocco vs Cameroon
AI weighed on home advantage, again and again, like a recurring character. Cameroon was treated as tough, disruptive, and capable of turning matches into street fights. But Morocco’s structure and crowd energy became the decisive “variable,” leading most predictions to tight, one-goal outcomes.
Our perspective on who wins: Cameroon has the most wins in knockout stages against AFCON host nations, having eliminated the host country on at least five occasions. If the match is a battle of attrition, the “Indomitable” nature of Cameroon usually prevails. They thrive in the mud and the grind, waiting for the opponent to tire so they can prove they truly cannot be subdued. However, if the match is a chess game, the Atlas Lions will win. They will use their superior organization and home-territory spirit to set a trap that even the strongest force cannot escape.
Nigeria vs Algeria
The AI models largely backed Nigeria to outscore Algeria, describing Nigeria as the bracket’s most explosive attacking force—capable of flipping a match in two minutes: one turnover, one sprint, one finish. AI noted that Algeria may control stretches but kept betting on Nigeria’s chaos.
Our perspective on who wins: Algeria has won the last four meetings against Nigeria across all competitions (including friendlies and qualification), setting the stage for a compelling quarter-final match. Victory would depend entirely on where the game is played, would it be in the open sky or deep in the desert sands? Would the eagles use their powerful commanding view to strike from above or will the Fennecs outmaneuver any aerial assault by staying low and fast where the big bird can’t easily follow?
The split decision: Egypt vs Ivory Coast
This is where the machines stopped nodding in unison. Some picked Ivory Coast (often after extra time), some picked Egypt (often via resilience or penalties). And honestly—that disagreement is not a weakness. It’s a pretty accurate summary of what this fixture is: momentum versus mentality, firepower versus survival instinct.
Our perspective on who wins: The match between the Pharaohs of Egypt and the Elephants of Ivory Coast is the most contested fixture in AFCON history. Egypt holds a dominant historical advantage in the tournament, having never been eliminated by Ivory Coast in a knockout match. If the game is a test of precision, the Pharaohs will trap the Elephants in a tactical labyrinth they can’t escape. But if the game is a battle of momentum, the Elephants will simply clear a path to the goal, proving that no amount of ancient wisdom can stop a three-ton charge.
The most consistent AI storyline
If there’s one recurring endgame, it’s this: Morocco appears in the final more often than anyone else, and multiple models land on a Morocco–Senegal final, with Morocco narrowly lifting the trophy at home. Even the AI models that disagreed on the path kept circling back to the same conclusion: hosts plus cohesion plus match-winners equal late-stage advantage. But the most revealing detail isn’t who they pick. It’s how they pick: penalties appear constantly. Even in simulated certainty, AFCON was treated as high-variance football—where one red card, one set piece, one goalkeeper masterclass can erase pages of logic in seconds.
The real point: AI isn’t replacing tentacles and prophets, it’s joining the debate
The best way to read these predictions is not as a betting slip, but as a mirror of how African football is being discussed right now. AFCON fans have always blended emotion with analysis. The only difference is the toolset: now AI algorithms sits beside the pundit, the scout, and the loudest guy at the table.
But AFCON remains stubbornly human. A
game plan can collapse in five minutes. A goalkeeper can become a national monument. A so-called underdog can turn into destiny wearing shin pads. So yes—enjoy the AI scorelines. Share them. Argue with them. Screenshot them for receipts.
And then watch the tournament do what it always does: remind everyone that the best part of football is what can’t be computed.
Because no model can calculate heart—especially on Africa’s biggest nights.
