Thousands of people in Nairobi struggled to get to work and school on Monday after matatu operators stopped services to protest rising fuel prices. Bus stations across the city filled with stranded passengers from early morning as most public vehicles stayed off the roads.
Many commuters waited for hours without finding transport. Some private drivers and boda boda riders took advantage of the situation by charging very high fares. Despite the expensive prices, demand remained higher than the number of available vehicles.
Transport groups blamed the crisis on the recent fuel price increase announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
Fuel prices in Nairobi have now reached record levels, increasing pressure on transport workers and ordinary citizens.
